Unlike Sydney, Brisbane or Perth, where you're primarily fighting heat, Melbourne homes need insulation that works in both directions. We need to keep warmth in during winter, and block heat out in summer. This double-requirement is the most important factor choosing insulation type and rating.
What Is R-Value and Why Does It Matter in Melbourne?
The R-value of an insulation product measures its thermal resistance - how well is resists heat flow. Technically, it's the thermal resistance of the layer, expressed in square metres kelvin per watt (m² x K/W), and it mainly describes resistance to conductive heat flow, not radiant heat (which we will cover later when we talk about wraps...)
But more simply, and for what you need to know, the higher the R-value, the better the insulation performance.
For Melbourne specifically, the NCC recommends minimum R-values of:

The Common Types of Insulation for Melbourne Homes
1. Glasswool Batts (Most Popular overall)

Glasswool batts (like Bradford Gold, Fletchers Pink Batts, Knauff Earthwool) are the most widely used insulation in Melbourne for good reason as they are affordable, easy to install in ceiling and wall cavities, and perform exceptionally well across Melbourne's seasonal range. It's worth noting that any mention of 'green' or 'wool' in glass wool batts is all marketing hyperbole - they are all made from recycled glass!
Best for: Ceiling and wall cavities in standard brick veneer or weatherboard homes
R-value range: R2 to R3 (for walls) – R5 to R8 (for ceiling)
Key benefit: Excellent cost-to-performance ratio
Downside: Can't handle excessive moisture
2. Polyester Batts (specific use cases)
Made from recycled plastic fibres, polyester batts are non-irritating to handle and very highly moisture-resistant. This is the main difference of when they are used - in areas that are subject to excessive moisture, such as under floor or in very humid areas around Melbourne such as bayside or coasts regions. They're a great choice for homes with anyone who is highly sensitive to fibreglass too. But keep in mind that fibreglass batts are considered hypoallergenic and bio-soluble, meaning they pose no treat to health but can irritate some extremely sensitive individuals.

Best for: Ceiling, walls, and underfloor applications
R-value range: R2.0 – R5.0
Key benefit: Safe to handle, moisture resistant, made from recycled content
Downside: Cost significantly more to manufacture and install
3. Reflective Foil Insulation (and building 'wraps')
Reflective foil and building wraps (like Sisalation or Sarking) work by reflecting radiant heat rather than absorbing it. In Melbourne, they're effective when used in combination with bulk insulation. Foil and other wraps by themselves are not sufficient by themselves! They also help with increasing your homes air tightness. If you've ever heard of passive homes, they put great emphasis on getting their building wraps/ foil to be as air-tight as possible.

Best for: Roof sarking, under-roof metal decking, in combination with other insulation.
Key benefit: Excellent summer heat reflectance; ideal paired with bulk batts
Downside: Don't provide much insulation at all by themselves, with R-values below 1.
4. Loose-Fill (Blow-In) Insulation
Loose fill or blow-in insulation is in all instances a relic of the past. You will still find it in older homes around Melbourne as it was popular 40+ years ago. Most commonly now it is vacuumed out and replaced with fibreglass batts. While it was cheap to install, the R-values are low and is subject to being blown around the roof cavities with Melbourne's vented roof designs, which means inconsistent coverage and performance. It is also a great habitat for pests like rats and possums!
Best for: Living in the 80's, not much these days
Key benefit: Was cheap and fast to install, covers gaps well
Downside: Low performance, degradation, requires top-ups
5. Rigid Board Insulation
Rigid foam boards (EPS or XPS) are used in specific applications like slab edges, concrete walls, and soffits. Think wherever concrete is present, such as car park ceilings or shopping centre ceilings. They are less common in standard residential installs, however growing in popularity for high-performance builds due to their high performance. They are held in place using specialist fixings and tools.

Best for: Slabs, solid masonry walls, concrete passive house builds
Key benefit: Very high R-value per millimetre of thickness
Downsides: Expensive to both purchase and install. Requires specialist tools and experience to install.
Where to Insulate First: Priority Areas for your Melbourne Home
Priority 1: The Ceiling
Up to 35% of heat loss and gain in an uninsulated home occurs through the ceiling. It's also the most accessible area in most homes, making it the highest-impact, most cost-effective place to start. Aim for a minimum of R5.0 in the ceiling for Melbourne, with most people choosing R6 as the cost is minimal. This is the best bang-for-buck you can do to insulate your home.
Priority 2: Under Floor
Subfloor insulation is often overlooked, but in Melbourne's cold winters, uninsulated floors over a subfloor can make rooms consistently cold underfoot and also a little damp. Polyester batts suspended between floor joists are the standard solution (as it can get moist under your home and fibreglass will drop in performance when moist). Priority 3: Walls
Walls account for around 20% of heat transfer. In new builds, insulation is installed during framing. In existing homes, it requires the plasterboard to be removed. Target R2.5 minimum. There is also acoustic options to help contain noise that are typically used around bathrooms. Because retrofitting requires the wall covering to be removed, many people opt not to retrofit walls due to the high cost of removing and replacing the plasterboard.
Priority 4: Sarking / Reflective Roof Layer / Wall Wraps
If you have a pitched roof with tiles or metal cladding like colourbond, adding some reflective sarking directly under the roof cladding helps block the radiant heat in summer, which is particularly valuable during Melbourne's increasingly intense heatwaves. Remember that this is in conjunction with other insulation as it only stops radiant heat coming in.
Insulation for Different Melbourne Home Types
Period Weatherboard Homes (<1900 to 1990's)
Many of Melbourne's beloved weatherboard homes, particularly in older inner suburbs like Fitzroy, Richmond, and Williamstown - have little to no insulation. The wall cavities are often narrow, making wall insulation difficult. Prioritise ceiling batts first, then underfloor, then sarking, then walls.
Brick Veneer Homes (1970s–2000s)
Did you know the brick veneer home is a Melbourne invention?! No wonder it's popular here! Unfortunately they are generally not well insulated, but the upshot is there is normally sufficient ceiling access to retrofit ceiling batts. The wall cavity is also generally larger than double brick homes, allowing for batts during renovation.
If your home is on a concrete slab then underfloor is unfortunately out as an option, but if constructed on stumps, and with 300mm access, then underfloor is a great second step after the ceiling.
Newer Double-Brick or Concrete Homes
Solid masonry provides some inherent thermal mass but limited R-value. Meaning it takes a while to change temperature but retails heat and cold. Rigid board insulation on the internal face may be required. These homes benefit most from upgraded ceiling insulation and reflective foil sarking.
New Builds in Melbourne's Growth Corridors
If you're building a new home, such as in growth areas like Clyde, Cranbourne, or Werribee, you have the opportunity to spec insulation correctly from the start. You builder will have to produce an Energy Report which is the NCC minimums for you're specific home. REMEMBER - the very marginal cost at build stage is absolutely minimal compared to the lifetime energy savings, always demand at least R5 in the ceiling!
Common Insulation Mistakes Melbourne Homeowners Make
- Choosing minimum R-values: NCC/ Energy Report minimums often underperform in Melbourne's extreme conditions. Always go higher where budget allows.
- Ignoring the underfloor: It's out of sight, so it's often out of mind, but Melbourne winters will remind you through your cold feet!
- Compressing batts: Compressed insulation loses R-value. Batts should always fill their cavity fully without being squashed into place. Choose Australia Made batts (for example not Knauff which are made in Malaysia and crushed down for extended period for transport) for full recovery and actually achieve the claimed rating!
- Leaving gaps: Even a small gap in insulation can significantly reduce whole-of-home performance. A neat, consistent, and total coverage installation matters.

- Is the property 2 storey or more? Fall protection may be required.
- Who is installing it? Unfortunately there are a number of shady operators who 'strip batts'; this means they split the batt in half, reducing it's R-value and the amount of material used. If their quote seems 'too cheap' there is a reason for this! Make sure they have a physical address (actually look them up on Google street view, don't rely on their website or hundreds of fake 5-star reviews!)
